The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) is holding public hearings to receive YOUR input on SDG&E’s proposal to test adding hydrogen to natural gas at their Kearny Mesa facility. Join us to speak out against this proposal! (note there are two hearings, the other at 5 pm, come to either)

Why hydrogen in methane gas pipelines is a bad idea:

  1. It’s a waste of YOUR MONEY. We already pay the highest rates in the country! SDG&E makes its shareholder profits by building and retrofitting natural gas infrastructure. The $21 million for this demonstration project is just the start.
  2. It’s a dangerous waste of ENERGY. Most hydrogen is made from fossil fuels, and even hydrogen from renewable resources doesn’t make economical sense for residential buildings. And hydrogen corrodes pipelines, catches fire quickly, causes negative health impacts (read more).
  3. It wastes TIME we don’t have. We must decarbonize, electrify, and transition to 100% renewable energy systems now – not tomorrow.

Attending in person? Masada will be there to meet folks at 1:45 outside the United Way Building (the hearing is in County Conference Room 100A.)

If you cannot attend in person, please make a public comment online through the CPUC’s website. This is also powerful as what you write becomes part of the public record.

See these talking points and instructions (thanks to our friends at SDBEC for the language).
